22 Listen to your father who begot you,
And do not despise your mother when she is old. (New King James Version)

How do we treat our parents when they are going through their process of aging?  When they lose their sight, hearing, are unable to remember certain events, color certain events, can’t walk without support…etc.   We respect them.  We listen to them.  We give them that honor. We do not treated them as neglected individuals who haven’t gone through life experiences that can often give us insight and solutions to our own issues and problems.  An African proverb states that what a child sees standing, an older person often sees while sitting. What does this mean? An older person has been around longer and should know better. Now, we are told to consult, listen, pay respect/homage to our parents but do realize that the final decision on the steps that you might need to take in your life are yours.

Lord give me patience when dealing with my older parents. Remind me daily, that I will also have to go through the aging process.  Help me do right by you as I do right by them.  Amen.
